A recent project that we worked on involved replacing a bay window on a Victorian house in Bristol.
Our client, an architect, had used our joinery services on several previous projects. Having been suitably impressed by the quality of our work he chose us to work on this slightly tricky window replacement. The bay window and flat roof were rotten so needed replacing and our client wanted a ‘like for like’ replacement to maintain the character of the building.
A downstairs bay window is typical of this style of Victorian property, but many of these bays were constructed without proper foundations, resulting in subsidence. The challenges with this project were a combination of the sill of the window having significantly subsided and the building footprint having irregular angles.
The replacement window was carefully built in our workshop ready to fit on site. Work included upgrading from single to double glazing and re-designing the frames to meet current building regulations. The flat roof was constructed on site, incorporating trickle vents to improve ventilation, helping to reduce condensation which can lead to mould forming. Our client was delighted with the finished work, saying it had turned out better than he could have hoped.
