Box sash windows

Box sash windows image

Wooden sash windows are common in period and listed properties as well as new properties looking to convey the classic Georgian or Victorian style. A high quality timber sash window can last a lifetime compared to the relatively short lifespan of UPVC. It can also enhance a building's character, appearance and potentially its value.

Modern sash windows

Wooden box sash windows used to have a reputation for being draughty. But modern double glazed units with draught proofing allow you to have the period style without the associated headaches. Available in a multitude of woods, stains and finishes with the highest quality window furniture. We can advise you on the best options to match your vision.

Single hung

Single hung sash windows only have one lower operating sash, the top sash is fixed into place.

Double hung

In a double hung sash window, both top and bottom sashes are operable. This can improve room ventilation in hot weather as warm air exiting through the top sash draws in cool air through the bottom sash. Another advantage with double hung sashes is that they are easier to clean from the inside then single hung sashes.

Sash repair and restoration

As sash windows are usually found in period and listed buildings, any alterations which are not like-for-like often require listed building consent. However the vast majority of problems found in historic sash windows can be rectified without the need for the expensive replacement of the sash windows or the sash box. Wessex joinery have extensive experience in repairing and restoring sash windows and returning them to their former glory. Where the deterioration is too bad we can manufacture new sash windows and install them in the existing frames. Or manufacture and install completely new timber sash boxes.

All of our Box Sash window designs are available in a complete range of colours and finishes. These include natural wood with a Danish Oiled finish, hand painted or a full factory finish where we can closely match any colour of your choice.
